Officials told reporters that this was expected to be confirmed by EU home affairs ministers as they meet in Brussels this Thursday. The final decision on Schengen enlargement is to be taken at the session scheduled for early December, when the ministers are to confirm the actual date.
Passport control on the internal land and sea borders of the nine Schengen candidate countries, including Slovenia, is scheduled to be scrapped on 21 December, just a minute after midnight, Portuguese presidency officials said ahead of Thursday's ministerial, which is to be attended by Slovenian Minister Dragutin Mate.
The presidency is planning Schengen expansion celebrations for 21 and 22 December, which unofficial sources say will take place simultaneously at several spots across Europe.
One of the ceremonies is to be held on the Slovenian-Italian border on 22 December. It is expected to be attended by the EU-presiding Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates. While border checks on land and sea borders are to be eliminated in December, passport controls at airports are to be scrapped in March when flight schedules change.
