I'm a little ashamed of myself right now, exactly of a lot of following faults that probably will seem terrible to you. But try to be merciful with me. I'm just learning :)
Actually, I'm studing for a natural science. Nothing with languages. It's my daydream, to can write and speak english more or less freely and understandable.
What about you? How did you have the idea of opening this group, of all groups?

Well, I▓d say you are a way too modest. I cannot evaluate your speaking abilities but you can definitely write freely and understandable.
There are a couple of mistakes, really minor ones. For example, in this context it▓s better to say ⌠mistakes■ instead of ⌠faults■. And certainly ⌠to be able to write and speak■ instead of ⌠to can■.
What about me? The idea of the forum came by itself. I am really fond of English, more than of any other language I speak. So I thought it would be nice to have some people around who share my hobby

I studied English a while ago but now it's more like hobby. Besides, I often need it for my work. Actually I have a lot of opportunities to practice it but when there are discussions about the language you always learn something new, even if you think you know everything (like it happens on the German language forum).
What about you? Why are you interested in English? And welcome in the club!

It's a strange situation for me, to communicate on-line with a dictionary on my desktop. Yesterday, i was speaking live with a fellow from Texas. Hi's born in Austin but his roots are in Bangladesh. It's pretty funny to listen him.

But besides my studying I bring up my two daughters and it makes everything a little complicated. Sorry, I must finish right now.

May I ask you something: do you live in Germany? You have to, otherwise you wouldn't have written "drunken" instead of "drunk". We are so used to saying "betrunken" that we don't notice the mixture of the languages anymore... Recently in an English-speaking company people thought I was German since I couldn't help saying "und" instead of "and"
I wish you not to be so awfully tired next time. BTW, I had a lot to do...

Is English your major at the university or just one of the courses? And I have a methodological question : at some point I noticed that when I was watching movies with subtitles I didn't really listen to what people say but just waited for written words. So I gave it up in order to learn to listen. Don't you have this problem?

Yes, i really do. Actually, I know that you say "drunk", not "drunken". However, I must have been too drunk for recall this. But you're right: often, the German adlles me totally when i'm trying to speak English (not only me, I think), particularly it addles the structure of phrases and let me misplace wrong prepositions. I think, first I should unlearn German (and then Russian).

You know, your English is really good, I don't know why you were so modest in the beginning.
And the words you use are quite sophisticated. I'd say too sophisticated for the conversational English. For example, addle. It is totally all right but I am sure I've never heard it from a native speaker. BTW, I've just looked up in Google and there are 60 "addles me" in comparison with 172000 "confuses me". The same with "unlearn German"┘ I personally would say "forget German".
Anyway, I am not a native-speaker, let's say we are practicing synonyms

As to the spelling, I guess the only way to improve it is to read and write more. I didn't have this problem since I learned to read and write first and started communicating later. I have to admit, when I came to the US for the first time I couldn't understand a word for two weeks
But if you want that others don't notice your problem with spelilng you could just use spellcheck
Btw, "if somebody corrects me"
and
spelling is a problem I have to deal with [without comma] ... or
spelling is a problem, I have to deal with it

You are also right -American English is something very special and it gets even worth if you move to the Southern States. I mean not only grammar and different words also pronunciation. From the other side not impossible.

Don▓t worry about this. Of cause we learn language in order to communicate with other people, but as soon as you get in English speaking environment you will be surprise by yourself how quick it starts to work. My point of view is good basic knowledge before you start to talk to others.

I don't want to write English I would rather speak English instead . The great problem of this group is that we all aren't native English/American etc. Therefore, we all make mistakes and if one says something wasn▓t right the author will maybe feel offence or say it was right etc. And how should we decide who is to blame? Per voting? That is the great problem and it shows that we couldn't improve our abilities this way. I think much more effective were to speak/write about how could we improve our skills or maintain our level if we are professionals yet . Leisure and English (see above) is a very well subject I think. I would suggest a bit more: "How to improve English in Germany if we have just a little time?" What about that?

What would you say?

The discussions in this group (all topics) are not much more demanding as that I found in another group, here you are, ⌠Чем отличается прыгать от скакать? Я обьяснила так: скакать - это прыгать в высоту, часто и коротко (не слишком высоко)⌠.
I don▓t think the knowledge of the deep difference between ⌠прыгать⌠ and ⌠скакать■ helps us really to speak Russian fluently: either we FEEL the difference or we are not fluent in Russian. And English or any other language is the same thing. Either you feel the language or you are not fluent. To know something theoretically is not enough and is often even badly because you have to translate if you want to speak/understand. But you want to speak/understand instead!
I▓m sorry for that hard words but don't we want to improve our discussion and make it more┘ rational┘?

Hi,
Do you know what▓s special about any Internet forum? You can▓t make people discuss what you (or I) think they should discuss. The last thing I would do is to limit the discussion to one topic only.
Your question ⌠how to improve English faster and easier■ is really important but what do you expect? For most people, to learn a language is hard work, and it takes time. If you could just start and give examples of how it possible to make it faster and easier, perhaps others could follow.

And I do think that the difference between ⌠прыгать⌠ and ⌠скакать■ can help one speak Russian better. And I do think that it is important to be confident that if you hear ⌠take care■ you answer the right thing. I do feel intuitively many nuances in the English language now, but when I started learning it, it was exactly the discussion of those nuances that helped me to become fluent in English.
You might have a different opinion but different opinions can coexist in the same forum. One does not exclude the other

Airet,
Brilliant!
What I would like to add is that it's much easier to criticise than start a new topic which would be interesiting, "rational" and so on... Isn't it?

Could you please tell me how you imagine this? Thanks!
